How to Care for and Store Holiday Wreaths
Wreaths are one of the most common holiday decorations for doors, walls and fireplaces. Whether made of pine, eucalyptus or fabric, they collect dust, lose shape or absorb moisture after a season on display. With the right care and storage, a wreath can keep its shape and colour for years.
Step 1: Dust Gently
After taking the wreath down, remove dust with a soft brush or a hair dryer on the cool setting, working from the centre outward. Do not shake or wipe hard, as leaves may loosen or fabric may fuzz. For pine and faux foliage, use cool air at a distance and a soft brush for tight gaps.
Step 2: Reshape
Faux wreaths are often compressed in storage or shipping. Lay the wreath flat and work from the inner ring outward, gently separating leaves, pinecones and berries. Reshape bent branches by hand, but avoid repeated bending in the same spot.
Step 3: Protect from Moisture and Sun
Make sure the wreath is completely dry before storage. Do not leave it in direct sunlight for long periods, as fabric can fade and plastic can age. If an outdoor wreath is caught in continuous rain, bring it inside to dry. For lighted wreaths, disconnect the power and check the light string and battery box for water.
Step 4: Store Correctly
Use a round storage box slightly larger than the wreath, or a cardboard box with soft padding. If neither is available, lay the wreath flat on a dry shelf and avoid stacking heavy items on top. Coil lighted strings separately to prevent tangling with branches.
Check Before the Next Season
Before reusing, check for mildew, insects or obvious fading. Test lighted wreaths before hanging. Repair loose sections with matching wire or a small amount of hot glue. With basic care, most wreaths can be used for several holiday seasons.
