Christmas trees and pine garlands are bulky, and caring for them is more involved than caring for small ornaments. Without the right routine, they collect dust, absorb moisture, lose shape and damage light strings. Here are four areas to focus on: dust, moisture, shaping and storage.

  Dust: Cover First, Then Store

For long displays, cover the tree or garland with a light dust sheet or old bed sheet to reduce dust in the branches. Avoid fully sealed plastic covers that trap moisture. Before storage, remove surface dust with cool air or a soft brush.

  Moisture: Keep Everything Dry

Make sure the tree and garland are completely dry before storage, especially pieces used near doors or outdoors. Store them in a ventilated place, not in a damp basement or corner. Disconnect lighted pieces and check the controller and plug for moisture. In humid regions, add a small desiccant pack to the storage box and replace it regularly.

Shaping: Work from the Inside Out

Trees and garlands are usually compressed in packaging. Before adding lights, separate the branches from the inner layer outward so each branch returns to a natural angle. Lay wreaths flat while shaping, then adjust pinecones, berries and bows to the front. Let the piece rest after shaping so the branches hold their form.

Storage: Separate Parts and Avoid Weight

For a detachable tree, store the sections, base and lights separately. Bundle branches by length or layer and label them for easy assembly next year. Store wreaths flat or in a round box, and never stack heavy items on top. Coil light strings separately to avoid tangling.

  Outdoor Use

Secure outdoor trees and garlands against wind. Bring them inside or add extra fixing before storms. After outdoor use, clean and dry them thoroughly before storage.

A few extra minutes of cleaning and shaping before storage can keep trees and garlands looking good for many seasons.
