Cleaning Guide for Fabric Ornaments, Bows and Christmas Stockings
Fabric ornaments, bows and Christmas stockings are among the most dust-prone holiday pieces. Different materials react differently to water and detergent, and the wrong method can cause shrinkage, fading or distortion. Check the material and trim before choosing a cleaning method.
Sort Before Cleaning
Pure fabric pieces without hard trim may be hand-washed. Pieces with sequins, beads, metal clasps or electronics should be spot-cleaned only. Velvet, faux fur and knit need gentle treatment and should never be vigorously rubbed or tumble-dried. If unsure, choose dry cleaning or spot cleaning.
Spot Cleaning Small Marks
Remove loose dust with a soft brush, then wipe the stain gently with a cloth dampened with a little mild detergent, working from the edge toward the centre. Do not scrub, as this can spread the stain or pill the fabric. Blot with a dry cloth and air-dry.
Hand Washing
For washable pieces, use cool water and a mild detergent. Soak briefly and press gently; do not wring or scrub. Reshape bows after washing so they dry in the right form.
Drying and Ironing
Dry flat in a shaded, ventilated area. Hanging wet pieces can stretch them. If ironing is needed, use a low setting and place a thin cloth between the iron and the decoration. Avoid direct heat on sequins, velvet or printed areas.
Check Before Storage
Make sure pieces are completely dry before storing. Store bows, stockings and ornaments flat and avoid heavy weight. Wrap metal parts in soft paper to reduce scratches and oxidation. Before the next season, check seams, hanging loops and trims, and repair as needed.
Fabric decorations do not need frequent washing. Regular dusting and spot cleaning are enough to keep them looking good and lasting longer.
